In 2022, Heart Niagara entered a partnership with the Thorold Active Transportation Committee to deliver Cycle Safety Education “Bike Rodeo” classes to all grade 5 and 6 students in the Thorold region free of charge.

Students are taught how to properly put on safety gear (i.e., wear a helmet) for bike riding and make sure their bicycle is safe to use before riding.

The Bike Rodeo program teaches students how to ride safely to school and throughout the community by helping them build fundamental cycling skills, road safety knowledge, and confidence on their bicycles. Through experiential learning, students review important bike safety topics, including hand signals, required safety gear, bicycle and helmet fit, braking, shoulder checks, straight-line riding, and rules of the road.
During the on-bike portion of the program, students have the opportunity to practice safe cycling skills in a supportive and engaging environment led by our nationally certified CAN-BIKE instructors. The session may also include fun cycling games, pre-ride safety checks, helmet and equipment inspections, and minor bike safety support when available.
By helping children feel more confident in their cycling abilities, the Bike Rodeo encourages active transportation, daily physical activity, and safer road habits. Heart Niagara believes that teaching youth about bicycle safety helps create safer communities for children, families, and everyone sharing the road.
